What’s Your Legacy?
FOND du LAC, Wis. – A retired prison guard ate his 25,000th Big Mac on Tuesday, 39 years to the day after eating his first … nine. Don Gorske was honored after reaching the meaty milestone during a ceremony at a McDonald’s in his hometown of Fond du Lac.
Surely McDonald’s most loyal customer, Guinness World Records recognized Gorske’s feat three years and 2,000 Big Macs ago, and the 59-year-old says he has no desire to stop. “I plan on eating Big Macs until I die,” he said. “I have no intentions of changing. It’s still my favorite food. Nothing has changed in 39 years. I look forward to it every day.”
The sign beneath the golden arches Tuesday read “Congrats Don Gorske 25000 Big Macs.”
Wow! 25,000 Big Macs! It sounds like Don Gorske is pretty proud of his accomplishment. The article made me think about the legacy we leave as Christians. When God calls us home, what will people say about what we’ve accomplished during our lives. I don’t know about you, but I’d like it to be about more than Big Macs.
We are called to live our lives in such a way that we demonstrate Jesus Christ in everything we do. Pastor Dennis’ current sermon series is, “Who I am in Christ” – who we are as Christians should count for something. I came across these verses from Psalm 71 that seem to describe what our legacy should be:
“O God, You have taught me from my youth; and to this day I declare Your wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, do not forsake me, until I declare Your strength to this generation, Your power to everyone who is to come.” – Psalm 71:17-18
When was the last time you told of God’s strength to other adults you come into contact with, or spoken of God’s power to the children in your life?
Now that’s a legacy!
